WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
In this workshop, we’ll explore direction and narrative in arthouse animation. We’ll delve into the narrative and visual style, and the storyboard as a tool for constructing and enhancing the story, incorporating practical techniques to enrich the creative process and artistic expression. We’ll also cover basic concepts of scriptwriting, narrative structures, character development, aesthetic proposals, pre-production, and financing.
We’ll work on putting together a comprehensive project portfolio and developing a narrative sequence with a storyboard, considering its subsequent journey through fundraising, development, and dissemination.

REQUIREMENTS
Have an idea to develop, whether it’s a short film, series, feature film, or music video.

SUKERMERCADO
She is an animated filmmaker and comic book artist born in Buenos Aires in 1994. She directed the short films Santa Sombra (2022) and Luz Diabla (2024), selected at more than 20 festivals, including Sundance, Annecy, FICG, Anima, and BITBANG.
As a comic book artist, she was published by Penguin Random House with the book El Viaje Real (The Real Journey), and her graphic novels La Sombra del Altiplano (The Shadow of the Altiplano), Si mojás me encendi (If You Get Me Lit), and Santa Sombra (Santa Sombra) have won awards and been screened in France, Spain, Algeria, Italy, and Argentina.
She has been selected for workshops and residencies such as Stories by Women (Disney, WIA), APALAB Residency, Annecy + Ventana Sur, and Ibermedia Next.
In the commercial field, she has worked with Cartoon Network, Netflix, UNOPS, and organizations related to human and gender rights.
As a partner at the Ojo Raro studio, she develops creative projects with a transfeminist and Latin American perspective, firmly believing in animation and comics as powerful tools for shaping possible presents and futures.
FLORENTINA GONZÁLEZ
She is an independent animation director and visual artist.
She trained at the National University of Arts and specialized in animation at the Da Vinci School. In 2020, she completed the Film Program at the Di Tella School, focusing on audiovisual experimentation.
She directed “El After del Mundo” and “Trompita y la Migración de Libres,” selected at national and international festivals. She is currently making her third short film: “El Enjambre”.
In 2023, she had her first solo exhibition, “Huesos de Azúcar,” at the Andreani Foundation. There, she presented an installation of animated videos and drawings on paper.

CONTENTS
Lesson 1 – Introduction: What is directing an animated work?
What does “direction” mean in animation? What does making creative decisions entail?
Author’s decisions, perspective, and approach. Direction as a perspective: personal approach, themes, obsessions, tone. Authorial styles.
The role of the director in authorial animation.
Creative tools.
Viewing and analysis of directorial styles. Comparative analysis of a scene in different directorial styles.
Brief presentation of personal projects by participants.
Practical exercise using triggers:
Why do I have to tell this story?
What makes it personal, unique, and non-transferable?
What is my perspective on this theme or universe?
What moves me, obsesses me, or motivates me about this idea?
Lesson 2 – Idea, logline, and synopsis
Where do ideas come from?
Logline and tagline: how to communicate the essence of the project.
Short and long synopsis.
Exercise: Write the logline, tagline, and project synopsis + group feedback.
Lesson 3 – The Universe and the Characters. Introduction to the Screenplay.
Character development (biography, social/personal/physical aspects, motivations, relationships). Conflict and transformation.
The universe as an extension of the conflict: fictional space-time.
General notions of screenwriting. Narrative references.
Exercise: Write character sheets + first images or references + narrative world map.
Class 4 – Aesthetic Proposal. Moodboard. Concept Art.
The concept of a “visual alphabet” and narrative tone.
Creating a mood board: tools, criteria, and references.
Building atmospheres, moods, and textures.
Art direction and visual style.
Exercise: Defining the aesthetic and narrative direction of your project + creating a personal mood board.
Class 5 – Script and Narrative Structures
ArquiPlot, MiniPlot, AntiPlot.
Event, conflict, and dramatic arc.
Exercise: Mapping the events of your story + drafting a treatment or story outline.
Class 6 – Development Folder: How to put together a bible
What is a project folder?
Creative and application uses (backgrounds, pitching).
Main contents.
Exercise: Putting together a first version of the folder.
Class 7 – Storyboarding and Staging
Types of shots and visual composition.
Timing, rhythm, and visual narrative.
Storyboard and Animatic planning for a short sequence.
Class 8 – Production and Financing
Preproduction. Schedule, budget, and technical crew.
Funding and festivals. Tips for applying to competitions.
Closing: Presentation of portfolios + feedback.
