Robert Löbel is a German animator and illustrator. He grew up in Dresden and has been interested in animation for as long as he can remember. At 19, he interned at a 2D animation studio. That experience made him realize that 2D animation is very difficult and that he wasn’t a good drawer.
After two years of low-paying jobs and several failed art school applications, he finally made it: he got into a small design college on the Baltic Sea. After two years, he realized he wasn’t going to learn anything about animation there, so he switched institutions and moved to Hamburg. While studying in Hamburg, he eventually moved to Berlin in 2010, like all the other hipsters.
In Berlin, he worked for a year at a motion design studio. There he learned how animation works in the fast-paced world of television and advertising. During that time, he met many nerdy people like Lucas Zanotto, Mate Steinforth, and Helge Kiehl. He learned much more from them than any university could have taught him.
In 2013, he graduated with his first animated short film, “Wind.” This film took him to almost all the major animation festivals in the world and allowed him to learn a lot about festivals, animation schools, financing, and the independent animation community.
Since then, he has made three more short films: Island, Link, and Time.
Together with Max Mörtl, his former colleague from Hamburg, he founded the animation collective Klimpa. Klimpa strives to land big projects while also experimenting extensively with the fusion of stop motion and 2D animation.
Today, Robert Löbel lives in a small town near Berlin called Brandenburg an der Havel with his partner and two children (ages 8 and 6). He continues to work as a freelance illustration and animation artist, trying to be more productive while dealing with parenting, the big question about AI, and other life challenges.
So stay tuned to hear what he has to share.
