Despacito: A Quick Look at Latin American Animation

The history of animation in Latin America is the story of a fractured continent trying to understand itself. Unlike the way animation developed in the United States, which seemed to revolve around technological advancements, intellectual properties, and patents, animation in Latin American countries served as a tool for expressing the needs of oppressed artists living in ever-changing political landscapes. This need is reflected in the fragmented aesthetics, the empirical passion for learning, and the underlying violence present in many of these films. Come take a look at this mosaic and perhaps discover why animation might be the best tool for this historical moment.

Animator and Creative Director, he studied Visual Arts in Bogotá, Animation in Cuba, and earned his Master’s degree in the United States. He is currently the Creative Director at Titmouse Animation Studios and the founder of Amaltea INC. Simón has worked for the Japanese television network TBS, directed projects for clients such as HBO, the Gates Foundation, Netflix, Disney TV, Starburns Industries, Apple, and Adult Swim. Recently, he was the animation director for Dua Lipa’s Hallucinate video and worked on animation for Charlie Kaufman’s latest film.

His filmography has been showcased worldwide, including seven consecutive selections at the Annecy Animation Festival. He has received various accolades, including a double award at the Adobe Design Achievement Awards, two Annie Award nominations, and two semifinalist nominations for the Student Academy Awards. In 2011, he was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship for artists.

The Impossible Future: Cartoons Against Capitalism

Talk with Paula Moura, Toni Balseiro, and Martín Haas. When we imagine our future, we often picture scenes from science fiction movies and series, with ecological devastation, discarded masses, technological surveillance, or some sort of apocalyptic situation. If we can’t imagine a different future, that’s the future we’re going to create, as we are actually doing. We live in a suicidal system, and we’re told we can’t change it because there’s no alternative. But fortunately, there are many alternatives, even if they don’t appear in mass media.

Not only are there alternatives, but there is also a whole movement, or rather many movements, building the foundations of a world that combines the best of the old with the best of the new. In ‘The Impossible Future’, we aimed to entertainingly tell those ideas and solutions, and for that, we turned to animation.
