Animated Documentary: Memories and Dreams

Stop-motion animated documentary workshop

By Camila Kater

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

A hands-on workshop on creating animated documentaries based on autobiographical narratives printed on thermal paper. We will animate dreams and memories through physical and chemical interventions—using heat, alcohol, paint, oil pastels, plants, and stamps on the printed rolls—and animate them frame by frame.

Educational Objectives:
  • Introduce the hybrid format of the animated documentary.
  • Tackle the challenge of representing the personal and the intangible, such as dreams and memories.
  • Experiment with thermal paper, printers, and interventions using alcohol, paint, and oil pastels.
  • Create custom stamps for the animation.

CONTENT

Block 1: Introduction to the animated documentary format, featuring a screening of short films. Experimentation with the thermal paper technique involving animation interference.

Block 2: Group discussion on memories. Gathering mobile phone footage, audio recordings, and personal testimonies. Printing video frames on thermal printers. Beginning the interference animation process on the printed rolls.

Block 3: Printing video frames on thermal printers. Interference-based animation on the printed rolls. Digitization of the frames.

Block 4: Interference-based animation on the printed rolls. Digitization of the frames. Assembly of the animations.
