Futuribles: Four Stations to Animate Possible Futures

Stop-motion workshop experimenting with natural and technological elements.

By Sonia Estévez & MOCO Estudio (Ana Martin and Bela Tagliabue)

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

As part of the BIT BANG festival, this workshop offers a space for exploration, play, and collective creation using stop-motion techniques to envision possible futures 100 years from now—in the year 2126.

Led by Sonia Estévez and Ana Martin—along with Bela Tagliabue—of MOCO Estudio, the workshop invites participants to experiment with two seemingly distinct realms: nature and technology. Leaves, stones, sand, cables, keys, circuit boards, plastics, and other discarded materials will take center stage in short animations, fostering new relationships, forms, and narratives through their combination.

Throughout the session, participants will explore the expressive potential of objects, discover how to bring them to life through movement, and craft small animated scenes collaboratively and by hand. At each station, they can choose from a variety of available materials as well as items they bring themselves. The workshop aims to introduce the basic principles of stop-motion animation—a traditional technique that creates the illusion of movement through a sequence of photographs—in a playful, engaging way.

Educational Objectives:
  • To explore the creative possibilities of various materials drawn from both nature and technology.
  • To experiment with the textures, shapes, and characteristics of objects to discover new ways of animating them.
  • To introduce participants to the basic principles of the stop-motion technique.
  • To stimulate imagination, play, and collaborative creation using everyday materials and discarded objects.
  • To create a space for gathering and experimentation where prior knowledge of animation is not required.

An Invitation to Create

The project begins with a simple question: what happens when nature and technology meet and coexist? How can we imagine new possible futures?

Through stop-motion, objects that usually remain still can come to life, transform, and interact in unexpected ways. The workshop invites participants to discover this frame-by-frame movement and to build a small animated universe together.

WHO IS IT FOR?

The workshop is open to everyone, regardless of prior animation experience.

It is designed for those eager to experiment, play with materials, and share a creative experience within a community setting. No technical knowledge is required; the goal is to explore stop-motion animation in an accessible, dynamic, and fun way.

WHEN?

Saturday, October 31

Duration: 4 hours

From 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. (UTC -3)

REQUIREMENTS

Each participant must bring:

  • A mobile phone with the free Stop Motion Studio app installed.
  • Natural materials, such as leaves, stones, twigs, sand, soil, seeds, or other elements that can be used for creating and animating.
  • Technology-related materials, such as circuit boards, cables, keyboard keys, old computer mice, electronic components, etc. Plastic or metal materials (without sharp edges), such as containers, may also be used.

It is important that the technology materials be broken, discarded, or no longer in use, to avoid damaging items that are still functional.

There is no need to bring large quantities of materials: a few diverse items will be sufficient to start experimenting and discovering the possibilities of animation.
