In-person theory-and-practice workshop – Friday, October 30

Comparative Anatomy Through a Modular Canon

Human and animal anatomy applied to realistic drawing, as well as to animal character design, concept art, and animation.

By Abril Barrado

What is it about?

The workshop proposes a novel teaching methodology for structuring and proportioning human and animal figures, designed to overcome the rigidities often found in traditional measurement systems. Unlike the classical canon based on head height, this workshop introduces a five-module analytical system that optimizes control over the human body’s torsion, axis, and dynamics.

Once this universal metric is established, comparative anatomy is employed as a technical tool for biomechanical translation to the animal kingdom, analyzing the structures and joints of caniforms, feliforms, equids, and ungulates.

Educational Objectives:
  • Introduce the use of a 5-part modular canon to simplify anatomical complexity.
  • Understand skeletal and muscular homology between humans and various mammal families.
  • Develop the ability to structure complex animals in dynamic poses with correct mechanical foundations.
Module Schedule: Module 1: The Modular Canon
  • Analytical presentation of the 5-module universal system for the human figure.
  • Practical exercise in rapid structural blocking-in.
Module 2: Application to Canines and Felines
  • Comparative anatomy and biomechanics of caniforms and feliforms.
  • Translation of joints (elbows, wrists, heels) and guided practice.
Block 3: Structure of Equids and Ungulates
  • Adaptation of the modular canon to a large scale: horses, deer, antelopes, and camelids.
  • Analytical study of unguligrade stances, necks, and lines of action in motion.
Block 4: Wrap-up and Review (20 min)
  • Evaluation of student exercises and addressing technical questions.

ABRIL BARRADO

Buenos Aires, 1975

Lived in Córdoba between 1988 and 1995, where he trained at the Emilio Caraffa Higher School of Fine Arts in Cosquín, graduating as a Visual Arts Educator. At the age of 20, he returned to Buenos Aires to launch his professional career. During his time in the mountains, he discovered a profound fascination with insects, animals, and the landscape. He turned art into a sanctuary for reflection, where emotions and conflicts merge into epiphanies. Through his sculptures, he gives form to the deep dance between the human psyche and the primal animal instinct for survival. This journey, which began over 38 years ago, is fueled by his fascination with anatomy—a passion that not only shapes his artwork but also enriches his teaching practice.

He has pursued an extensive career in the world of graphic arts and animation, working on books and comics featuring Looney Tunes, Pinky and the Brain, and Disney properties. Worked with Carlos Meglia on comics such as *Star Wars* (Dark Horse) and *Monster World* (DC Comics). Animated series and films: *Mi Familia es un Dibujo*, *Dibu La Película*, *La venganza de Nasty*, García Ferré’s *Manuelita*, and *Los PinTin*.

In 1999, traveled to Barcelona and the United States, specializing in character design and layout for *El Cid: The Legend* (Filmax Barcelona) and Cartoon P. (Valencia, Spain). Later, in Burbank, California, worked on the film *Pogo*, directed by Cavin Cooper. Illustrated *Bambi* and *Beauty and the Beast* books for Disney Paris.

Upon returning to Argentina in 2003, began a distinguished teaching career. Has taught at companies such as Hook Up Animation, Plenty, and Etermax, as well as at university-level institutions like Image Campus (Animal and Human Anatomy; Backgrounds and Set Design), UNA Extension Programs (Illustration), and UCINE (Drawing I & II; Stop Motion and Set Design). Currently, she is responsible for the professional training of artists at Disney Latin America. For 22 years, she has also developed and taught her own private courses on human and animal anatomy.

She won the First Prize for Sculpture at the 2018 National Visual Arts Salon. She has participated in dozens of national and international exhibitions—both solo and group shows—including the “Angar 17” International Contemporary Art Salon in Lisbon, Portugal (2001). She received the Senyera Art Award at the “International March Salon” at Atarazanas, Valencia, Spain (2001). She was selected for the 54th and 68th Manuel Belgrano Visual Arts Salon. In 2023, she was selected for the National Visual Arts Salon (Fire Arts category). Exhibitions include the Néstor Kirchner Cultural Center (2020 and 2025) and the Recoleta Cultural Center—specifically the “Principio del juego” exhibition (2024/2025), curated by Rodrigo Alonso—as well as various museums such as MACLA (La Plata), MUMBAT (Tandil), MACSUR, and the Emilio Caraffa Museum (Córdoba).
