In-person theory-and-practice workshop – Saturday, October 31
Looking at Animation: Tools for Film Criticism
Film Criticism Workshop.
By Rocío Frías
WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
In this workshop, we will explore tools for developing a critical perspective on animated cinema, focusing specifically on elements that enable us to analyze—rather than merely review—animated films. We will discuss arguments based on character design, the use of color, composition, textures, rhythm, sound, and world-building. Through the analysis of excerpts from various animated films, participants will learn to identify formal and narrative choices, as well as philosophical concepts, and translate them into arguments for critical analysis.
Educational Objectives:
To develop a critical and analytical perspective on contemporary animated cinema, exploring its aesthetic and thematic approaches through various theoretical lenses.
To provide participants with an accessible methodology for analyzing and writing about animated films, incorporating tools for film analysis and fostering the development of an individual critical voice.
CONTENT
Module 1 – What does it mean to critique an animated film?: A discussion on the distinctions between personal opinion, reviews, and film analysis.
Module 2 – How do you analyze an animated film?: An examination of various elements, including characters, settings, color, lighting, composition, animation techniques, and the relationship between aesthetics and narrative.
Module 3 – From Film Frame to Argument: Short film clips are screened, followed by a collective exercise. The goal is to learn how to move from visual observation to interpretation.
Module 4 – Writing Exercise: Each participant selects one of the clips explored and writes a short critical paragraph (150–200 words). Afterward, some of these texts are read aloud, and the group provides feedback.
